The support groups for first time mothers consist of 8 facilitated sessions with the group continuing to meet after that for as long as there is interest – and many of these groups stay together for years! After the 2nd meeting, the moms will get together once more during the week for an activity or outing. This allows the moms to get to know each other better socially and also helps in gaining confidence about getting out and about in the world with your little one.
During the course of the facilitated group you can expect to cover these topics (and more): sharing birth or adoption experiences, moms recovery and reclaiming her body, getting a break, sharing parenting responsibilities, working or not working, childcare, identity – who are you now?, relationships etc.. We also discuss the practical concerns of parenting like sleep and feeding, how to play with baby and development.
A support group is an excellent way to normalize your experience as a new mother. It is also a great way to make long term contacts with others that are going through the same adjustments and challenges that you are. It can help to break the isolation that can accompany time with a young baby in a safe and nurturing environment.
The groups for Oakland area moms meet at the Lake Merritt United Methodist Church and the groups for Berkeley area moms meet at the lactation support offices of Janaki Costello which is on San Pablo Ave near Solano Ave.. Sites for San Francisco and Lamorinda groups are still being researched and groups will be offered in these areas starting in the Fall.
The fee for the 8 week session is $275. I am happy to discuss payment arrangements if that is of help, I don’t want finances to be the reason for not accessing this support.
